The Four Faces Bronze Sculpture Series

3/30/2016

It's amazing how fast time goes by. For the past three months I've been working in bronze. Today, I brought home the first completed one in the series. My forthcoming Spring Newsletter will feature an article on my work at the foundry and an outline of some of the steps in the process. A picture of the new sculpture is presented here without the benefit of a more professional presentation to facilitate an early view of the piece.

Two views of the same sculpture size approx 8.5"x10.5"x 6"
My plan is to do a small edition of five of each of the four pieces in the series. The pre-publication price for this piece is $3750 (thru April 20)--only two are available at this price.

I have not yet selected a name for this piece. I would like your help choosing among the four following choices: a) Classically Surreal; b) Eye Knows; c) Simply Surreal; d) Surreal Faces.

An  Artist with Carpal Tunnel can do little-- new work or otherwise

6/19/2015

Until a week or so ago I could only imagine what Carpal Tunnel would be like. Now I have this problem and it is so painful that I can not use my hand at all. It is as if all of the nerves in every finger are shooting off and shouting at the top of their lungs. The scream is internal but the pain is external. No new art can be produced, no typing, no driving no nothing--until the pain begins to subside.
Worse than artist block, the carpal tunnel obliterates all. My doctor provided me with an arm brace and some pain pills and told me to wear the brace for a week and then as the pain began to subside, I could begin to do some hand exercises.
Today (6/19/15) marks the week and I have begun to be able to type and drive and hope to be able to begin to draw and paint within another week or so.
What experiences have you had with carpal tunnel and how did it affect your work?

May I Have This dance?--Oil on Canvas

My website is now populated with a selection of my work. Creating a website is a surreal and complex experience. Though necessary in today's world, this task takes valuable time away from art creation. During the last month I have been refining the image presentations and adding titles and other information and will soon have completed that task.
Over the years an artist creates and produces many pieces. At any point in time only a small selection of the total "inventory" can be presented here. From time to time, I will write about one or more of the pieces on the site or about a piece on which I am still painting. In the next several days and weeks I will be adding a "store" so that interested parties can actually purchase work directly from the website.
My plan is to include a more active participation in various social media so that others will be able to see my work and spread the word.  If you are reading this blog, you will obviously know how inexperienced a blogger I am. So I invite you to provide me some advice on how to proceed to spread the word and expand my viewing public. You can even let me know what your thoughts are about some of the artwork and whether you would like to own a piece or two--or more!  BG

Barry's Sunset Strip Billboard, May 2015

I hope you will have a chance to drive by this billboard on the world famous Sunset Strip, just east of Doheny (on the North side of the street---at 9039 Sunset Blvd---just opposite what many years ago was the wonderful restaurant "Scandia", now closed for many years). In the 1960's thru today, this part of West Hollywood has always been crowded with heavy traffic for nightclubs, restaurants and all sorts of lookie-lous, both local jet setters and tourists. These pictures will be up for the first half of May in rotation with seven other artists. For more information about each picture see my website.
The three pictures are:
"A Lovely Lady"
"May I Have This Dance"
"On the Bench"
The originals are all Oil on Canvas

The blog begins...

Only 20 or so years late, I have finally begun my website and blog. What follows will grow into something creative and hopefully interesting. My intention is to add context or tell the stories behind some of my artwork. Periodically, I may comment or make observations about the art around me or the art market, generally. I am especially interested in what you think or feel about the art community, art work you like or have seen or my work. Below is a recent picture called California Floral Series: Flora-Sapien.
