Societal View: Stable Table and Other Life Patterns
ABOUT “SOCIETAL VIEW”
This painting is a very sociological picture. It is actually a picture about societal progress. This is the explanation. In social theory, among various formulations there is one notion called “equilibrium” and another called “conflict theory”. In a sense, these two concepts are in opposition to each other. In equilibrium, opposing forces are balanced, and in conflict theory, opposing forces are in conflict with each other. This is a way of understanding the basic dynamic of social organization. This picture is about the two forces taken together and providing the ongoing dynamic to move society forward. Internally, the opposing forces whether in opposition or in equilibrium occur on an individual basis, but society is propelled forward as the dynamic process leads to discovery, creation and ultimate movement forward.

About my recent artwork in Acrylics
During the last several months I have been painting in Acrylics on Canvas. The transformation from oils to acrylics takes a bit of getting used too. First, acrylics dry much faster than oils, their viscosity is different, and the whole timing of the painting process is thereby transformed. The creative process is the same and the use of brushes and other implements is similar. My imagery, is not noticeably different, though I think I am trending towards the use of more simplified elements. Here, when I say “elements” I mean things like eyes, hands, legs and other body parts, trees and flowers, etc.
I continue to be fascinated by “color” and spend a great deal of time working on coloration. Working, means staring at my picture and considering how colors work with each other, clash with each other, blend, complement, contrast with each other. In some ways, my artwork is like a musical piece. Not only are there rhythms in my mind, but the painting process is a continuous application of counterpoint between lines, colors, designs, use of space, textures, perspective and viewpoint.
The artistic process is part creative impulse, and intuitive, part execution and part artistic flair and experience. The artistry comes from and during the initial creative impulse. Whether from some muse, some mystical origin or some inspirational event, the mind takes over from the unconscious to execute the plan and solve the continuous set of problems that develop while painting. Utilizing or “manufacturing” accidents, balance between elements, and knowing at what point the artist can stop, all develop with practice.
Below is a brief review of a few of my recent acrylics on canvas. Pictures in this series are all 30”(H) X 24”(W).

A Tree Talking to Flowers - I believe that trees have a spirit and communicate with the elements around them. Here, a tree and the flowers are involved in an animated conversation.
Echoes of Brilliance - Brilliance here refers to the declining yet sustained self image as the physical body diminishes, yet the brilliance of our mental faculties remain ascendant and sharp, a reminder of accomplishments of the past.

Exotica - Recognizable elements, yet reminiscent of far off places. The design and textures enhance how our eye leads us into our own internal fantasies.
Picnic - Laying casually across each other close as only a couple of lovers can be - out enjoying each other’s company in a colorful environment with hints of green parkland and seashore or water nearby. The colors set the mood and catch the feeling.

The Spring Kiss - Here you see the young man kissing his girlfriend, expressing his special feeling for her as Spring begins to blossom. His mind is in a muddle – turned to scrambled mush – but he feels exhilarated by the experience. Notice how the simple elements are so easily recognizable, colors play a role in how the scene is interpreted and textures and lines enhance the experience.
Hurry Harry - Harry, the trees and the wind are one as they push him forward. The wind and trees have melded their spirit into Harry and become an integral part as he rushes forward.

Sunshine at Night - Sometimes a person feels so-o-o good that they are literally shining so bright that even at night their personality and persona outshine all of their surroundings.
Family Stroll - A casual family stroll with all of the good feelings of being out with the family, yet holding back on some of the sublimated more problematic issues and tensions hidden among other favorable parts of the family unity.
